Today, we had a guest speaker: Jihan A. Mohammed, who had a short introduction about the origins of ISIS, or the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. We had a conversation-style discussion with refreshments provided by Cosi. Jihan is a native
of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region and a PhD student in Sociology at MSU. Her areas of research are Kurdish ethnic identity and minority identity. She left Iraq in May 2013.
We had a fantastic turnout and I couldn't be happier with how the conversation went. It definitely provided a lot more insight about the humanitarian crisis going on in the region.
If you would like more information, please see this Vice News video on the Islamic State: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUjHb4C7b94
There are other resources to donate to help the refugees in the region, however I don't have the links for these!
Thank you, Jihan!
